The Legend of the Poinsettia
Walking to church one Christmas Eve, a poor Mexican boy wished he had a gift
for Baby Jesus which he could place at the church’s nativity scene. He had been
told that even a humble gift when given in love is acceptable in God’s sight, so he
picked some weeds along the roadside and made a bouquet. As he entered the
chapel with his modest gift, the weeds miraculously burst into vibrant red, star-like
blooms. Since then, these beautiful flowers have been known as Flores de
Noche Buena, Flowers of the Holy Night, which bloom every Christmas.
